What is XML?

XML is a structured format that forms the basis underneath many standards. Below you can read what it is and where you encounter it.

In short

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a format for recording data in a structured way with tags. It is more extensive and stricter than JSON and the basis underneath standards such as UBL, SOAP and many EDI messages.

Data with tags

XML (Extensible Markup Language) records data with tags, similar to how a web page is built up. Each piece of data sits between an opening and a closing tag, so that the structure and meaning are clear. XML is more extensive and stricter than JSON.

It is precisely that strictness that makes XML suitable for formal agreements. It is the basis underneath standards such as UBL (e-invoicing), SOAP and many EDI messages.

XML in connections

Many existing and business systems exchange data as XML. We read and create those messages and translate where needed between XML and JSON, so that an older and a modern system can still talk to each other.
