What is master data (MDM)?

Master data are the core data that must be the same everywhere. Below you can read what it is and why a single source is so important.

In short

Master data are the core data that must be the same everywhere in an organisation: items, customers, suppliers and prices. Master Data Management keeps that data consistent from a single source, so that every connected system works with the same truth.

The core data of your company

Master data are the data that must be consistent in all your systems: items, customers, suppliers, prices and, for example, general ledger accounts. Unlike transactions (an order or invoice) they do not change often, but if they are not correct, something is wrong everywhere.

Master Data Management (MDM) is about managing that data from a single source of truth, usually the ERP. Every connected system gets its items and contacts from there, so that everyone works with the same data.

Why it counts for connections

Many connection problems stem from messy master data: duplicate customers, items with differing codes or prices that do not match. By distributing master data from a single source and deduplicating it neatly, orders and invoices run through without differences.
